The Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended the strike embarked on early this month, July. This came following the release of salaries by the federal government on Tuesday.
A-Media Update learnt that the ASUU branches have directed their members to resume work immediately.
Dr. Haruna Angulu, the chairperson of the branch at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, announced that faculty members have returned to work now that their salaries for June 2025 have been paid. At the University of Jos, a notice from the bursary department confirmed that salaries have been paid, which has encouraged the striking lecturers to come back to their teaching duties.
Additionally, a message from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Kashere informed their members that they should also resume work because their previously delayed salaries have now been received.
Meanwhile, Dr Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education has emphasised the federal government commitment and effort in meeting demands. In a statement released on Tuesday, he stressed that the government value the children and will ensure institutions are open always.
“It is not by coincidence that Nigerian public tertiary institutions have remained open and stable for the past two years, something that has not happened in several decades", Alausa said.
“This is a reflection of our government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining cordial relationships with all stakeholders in the education sector.
“We are meeting demands in phases, and we are doing so respectfully and consistently,”
“Our children are the heartbeat of the nation, and their uninterrupted education is non-negotiable.
“The Federal Government will continue to work closely with all unions in the education sector to ensure that the gates of our institutions remain open,” he added.
