From Vision to Reality: UNILORIN SU 37th Executives Set New Standard, Deliver Smart Innovation with Two Solar-Powered Sit-Out Legacy Projects

In a bold demonstration of smart leadership and dedication to student welfare, the 37th Central Executive Council of the University of Ilorin Students’ Union, led by Comrade Agezeh Victor Oghenetega (VICTEG), has officially delivered two fully functional solar-powered sit-out facilities, now commissioned as capital projects under its administration.

The sit-outs located at the Main Campus and the College of Health Sciences (COHS) were commissioned on Friday, July 4, 2025, and are already being hailed as a transformative project for the university community. The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, alongside principal university officers, the Dean and Sub-Deans of the Student Affairs Unit, invited dignitaries, union officials, newly elected executives and students.

In his keynote address, the Vice Chancellor praised the 37th Students’ Union for its commitment to innovation and practical service. He described the project as a “smart and timely intervention” that directly addresses students' academic needs, especially during power outages.
He praised the union’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, assuring continued support from the university management for projects that directly benefit the student population.

Speaking at the event, the Students’ Union President, Comrade Agezeh Victor Oghenetega (VICTEG), expressed appreciation to the university management for their unwavering support. He noted that the project is part of the Union’s Tech-Up Agenda, a student-driven policy aimed at tackling long-standing infrastructural and academic challenges through smart solutions.

The commissioning of the solar-powered sit-outs marks a significant milestone in the Students’ Union’s “Smart Path to Great Dispensation,” demonstrating the capacity of student leadership to initiate and deliver capital projects that directly impact learning conditions and academic productivity.

According to the Union’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Yunus Kamaldeen (DEEN), each sit-out can seat up to 100 students, fully powered by solar energy. The spaces are built to serve multiple purposes; These spaces are designed to provide reliable lighting, charging points for electronic devices, and a serene environment for studying especially during periods of power outages.

The initiative has received widespread commendation from students, who see it as a visible example of responsible governance, visionary planning, and impactful execution. This project not only reaffirms the Union’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence, but it also sets a new benchmark for what student-led leadership can achieve when focused on purpose and progress.

As the administration nears the end of its tenure, these solar-powered sit-outs stand as a lasting legacy of the 37th Students’ Union, a project powered by vision, backed by collaboration, and built for the future.
